The Apple iPad (4th generation), also known as the iPad 4 or iPad with Retina display, is a tablet computer released by Apple on October 26, 2012 (with Wi-Fi models shipping November 2, 2012, and cellular models shortly after). It succeeded the third-generation iPad and was the last full-sized iPad to feature a 30-pin connector before the switch to Lightning. Priced starting at $499 for the 16GB Wi-Fi model, it was discontinued in October 2014 following the launch of the iPad Air. This device was notable for its performance improvements over its predecessor while retaining the high-resolution Retina display, making it suitable for media consumption, web browsing, gaming, and light productivity tasks.
#### Key Features and Improvements
- **Design and Build**: Measures 9.50 inches tall, 7.31 inches wide, and 0.37 inches thick, weighing 1.44 pounds (Wi-Fi) or 1.81 pounds (cellular). It features an aluminum unibody construction with a scratch-resistant glass front and available in black or white.
- **Display**: 9.7-inch LED-backlit IPS LCD Retina display with a resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels at 264 pixels per inch (ppi), supporting 10-finger multi-touch and delivering vibrant colors and sharp text for reading, video, and apps.
- **Performance**: Powered by the Apple A6X chip—a dual-core 1.4 GHz processor with quad-core graphics—paired with 1 GB of RAM. This provided smoother multitasking and graphics-intensive tasks compared to the A5X in the previous model.
- **Storage Options**: Available in 16 GB, 32 GB, 64 GB, or 128 GB configurations (the 128 GB variant added in January 2013).
- **Cameras**: 5 MP rear iSight camera (autofocus, 1080p HD video recording) and 1.2 MP front FaceTime HD camera (720p video).
- **Connectivity**: Dual-band 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, and optional 4G LTE cellular (with GPS and GLONASS support on cellular models). It introduced the Lightning connector for faster charging and data transfer.
- **Battery Life**: Up to 10 hours of Wi-Fi web browsing, video playback, or music listening; up to 9 hours on cellular data.
- **Software**: Shipped with iOS 6, upgradable to iOS 10 (final supported version). It was the last iPad with a 32-bit processor, limiting compatibility with later iOS releases like iOS 11+.
- **Other Features**: Dual microphones, stereo speakers, accelerometer, gyroscope, ambient light sensor, digital compass, and support for Siri (introduced in iOS 6). Accessories like the Smart Cover were compatible.
