### Overview
The Apple iPad 2 (often referred to as the 2nd generation iPad) was a groundbreaking tablet released in 2011, introducing significant hardware improvements over the original iPad, including a thinner design, faster processor, and the addition of cameras for FaceTime. Announced by Steve Jobs on March 2, 2011, it was the second model in Apple's iPad lineup and helped solidify the tablet as a mainstream device. It shipped with iOS 4.3 and received updates up to iOS 9.3.6, but is no longer supported by Apple as of 2016 due to hardware limitations.

- **Design Upgrades**: 33% thinner and 15% lighter than the original iPad, making it more portable while retaining the same vibrant 9.7-inch screen.
- **Performance**: The A5 chip enabled smoother multitasking, faster app loading, and better graphics for games and video – a major leap at the time.
- **Cameras and Video**: Added front and rear cameras specifically for FaceTime video calls and basic photo/video capture, which was absent in the first iPad.
- **Battery Life**: Consistently delivered all-day usage, even with the added features.
- **Software Ecosystem**: Integrated with Apple's App Store, iTunes, and features like AirPlay for wireless streaming. It supported six major iOS versions, longer than many contemporaries.
- **Environmental Notes**: Apple emphasized recyclability, with the iPad 2 using mercury-free displays and PVC-free materials.
### Availability and Pricing (Historical)
Originally priced at $499 for the 16 GB Wi-Fi model, up to $829 for 64 GB Wi-Fi + 3G. Higher-capacity models were phased out in 2012 after the 3rd-gen iPad launch, leaving only the 16 GB version until full discontinuation around 2014. As of November 2025, it's long obsolete and unsupported, but used/refurbished units can be found on secondary markets for $50–$150, depending on condition.
### Reception and Legacy
The iPad 2 received widespread praise for its refined hardware and performance, with reviewers noting it "moved the bar far ahead" of competitors. It sold millions quickly and remained popular for years due to its longevity. However, modern apps may run slowly on iOS 9, and it lacks features like USB-C or high-res displays found in current iPads.
If you're looking to buy one, restore it, or compare to newer models (e.g., iPad 10th gen), let me know for more details!
